JR Kyushu’s First Off-Site Corporate PPA for Stations
Development of New Solar Power Plants in Kyushu and Supply of Renewable Energy to Station Facilities
Kyushu Railway Company (hereinafter referred to as JR Kyushu), UPDATER Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as UPDATER), and GPSS Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as GPSS) have announced a joint initiative to supply 100% renewable energy※1 to 18 station facilities, including local stations like Nagasaki Station and Shinkansen stations like Shin-Yatsushiro Station. This is the first time JR Kyushu is utilizing an off-site corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) ※2.
Under this initiative, GPSS will develop and construct small to medium-sized solar power plants in Kumamoto and Fukuoka Prefectures. The electricity generated will be purchased by UPDATER’s decarbonization business “Minna Denryoku” and supplied to JR Kyushu’s station facilities using renewable energy certificates. Together, the three companies will continue to work towards achieving net-zero CO2 emissions and contributing to a sustainable society.
* 1 By combining electricity generated from renewable energy sources with the environmental value of non-fossil certificates designated for renewable energy, we supply 100% renewable energy (with zero CO2 emissions).
* An off-site corporate PPA is a power procurement model where a power generation company installs and owns solar power generation facilities outside the demand site. A retailer then supplies renewable electricity to the customer at a fixed price for a long period.
1.Supply Locations
JR Kyushu: 18 facilities, including both local and Shinkansen station buildings.
2. Background
JR Kyushu is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, as part of its efforts to realize a decarbonized society. This off-site corporate PPA was implemented after being selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s FY2023 subsidized project, the “Demand-Side Solar Power Introduction Promotion Project.”
Note: The subsidy project was awarded to the power generation company “Sustainable Energy No. 1 LLC.”
3. Implementation Scale
Generation capacity: 3,982.1 kW (DC), 2,953.3 kW (AC)
Estimated annual power generation: Approximately 4.85 million kWh
4. CO2 Emission Reductions for Target Locations
Annual reduction: 2,041 tons of CO2 (equivalent to the emissions of about 788 households)
5. Off-Site Corporate PPA Scheme
