Tokyo, Japan – April, 2025 – GPSS Engineering, a Japanese renewable energy engineering company, and CYTOK GmbH, a German innovator in hydrogen methanation technology, are pleased to announce the execution of a licensing agreement. This agreement grants GPSS Engineering the rights to implement CYTOK’s cutting-edge technology in Japan and Taiwan, marking a significant advancement in the region’s sustainable energy landscape.
This licensing agreement builds upon the strong foundation of collaboration between the two companies. In May 2023, GPSS Engineering and CYTOK GmbH entered into an exclusive partnership to combine their expertise in innovative and sustainable plant development. This partnership aimed to make field-tested power-to-gas systems available to the market, leveraging CYTOK’s globally patented, emission-free energy storage system.
CYTOK’s technology can help Japan and Taiwan address critical energy challenges, including those posed by natural disasters and the countries’ limited grid capacity. Their decentralized hydrogen and synthetic methane production systems provide a resilient energy solution in areas where traditional infrastructure is vulnerable to damage or entirely absent. By enabling the usability and complete storage of locally produced green electricity, CYTOK’s technology reduces dependence on centralized power grids, which are often strained or unavailable in remote or disaster-affected regions.
Additionally, the green methane produced can serve as a reliable backup power source, enhancing energy security for communities during emergencies. Here, the conversion of hydrogen into synthetic methane offers additional advantages. The proven and cost-effective natural gas technology can continue to be used, and the systems are redundant to the existing infrastructure and therefore offer a high level of supply security. The safety regulations are also significantly lower compared to the storage of hydrogen. This decentralized approach also helps alleviate grid congestion, a growing issue both in Japan and Taiwan due to increasing renewable energy adoption and transmission bottlenecks. By integrating CYTOK’s systems, regions with limited grid access can achieve greater energy independence, ensuring a stable power supply while advancing both countries’ transition to a sustainable energy future.
About GPSS Engineering
As an engineering company within the GPSS Group, GPSS Engineering takes on the challenge of optimizing all aspects of quality, cost, and schedule of each project. Through dialogue with local residents, who serve as joint project partners, the company provides valuable proposals from an engineering standpoint and constructs power plants that are environmentally friendly and embraced by the community.
About CYTOK GmbH
CYTOK GmbH, based in Rostock, Germany, specializes in hydrogen methanation technology. Their innovative solutions facilitate energy storage by generating hydrogen from renewable energy and using a catalyst to synthetic methanize it together with CO₂. Notably, they have developed a closed-loop system that captures and stores CO₂ from methane combustion for reuse in methane production, achieving complete CO₂ emission-free operation—a CCU technology for which they hold a patent.
